Letters to Madeline: This is Your Daddy

It's often said that the bond between a father and his daughter is unlike any other. For you, my sweet girl, this is your daddy.

Dear Madeline,

In a couple of weeks, you will be five. By now you know that this is your daddy...

And that this is your daddy...

And that this is also your daddy...

Yes, it's true. You have two Star Wars geeks as parents. Your daddy's humor, silliness, and goofy antics are a part of the wonderful man I fell in love with. It is also the same man who first stole your heart as well, even though you will not realize this for another 40 years.

But this is also your daddy...

This is the night that your daddy and I met for the first time. This is your daddy, the romantic.

And this is your daddy…

This is the night we found out mommy was pregnant. This is your daddy, the dreamer.

And this is also your daddy...

This is the moment you both met. This is your daddy.

What more is there to say about your daddy other than you are the center of his world? From the moment you both met, it was love at first sight and that love has only continued to grow over the last four and a half years. Your daddy always dreamed of having a family of his own, more importantly, he always dreamed of having a little girl.

Pretty cool that you're a person who makes dreams come true, huh?

Your dad grew up in Florida and attended The Florida State University when he graduated from high school. From there, he went into the communications field and has done some pretty cool shit over the years such as working for NASA. Yep, that NASA. He played an instrumental role in the corporate communications of the Columbia Shuttle explosion and designed most of the memorial pieces that followed. Your daddy coached girls tennis, has won several CASE awards including a Grand Award for best magazine redesign, Gold Award for Editorial Photography, and a Special Merit Award for best individual magazine photograph, designed a license plate that people still buy to this day in Florida, has his BA, his MA, and now his MFA.

Yeah, he's a pretty smart guy. However...

I'm willing to bet that out of all the cool things he's done and accomplished in his life, if you were to ask him what his finest, most beautiful creation has been, this is what he'd say...

So, what else should you know about your daddy? Here's a little breakdown...

Astronaut/Space, movies, drums, tennis, reading, comedy, theater, swimming, sports, haircuts, writing, eating, cooking, teaching, UFOs, Disney World, Chemistry, bookstores, school, antiques, fishing, drawing comics, family, magazines, candles, reading Hebrew, doing voices/imitations, radio, Science Fiction, watches, Dr. Who, Abbott and Costello, Three Stooges, Andrew Sisters, Big Band & Swing music, British culture, lizards, kissing, dolphins, boats, water slides, costumes, Pot, leather jackets, ski caps, white noise, travel, surf shops, collecting tennis racquets, doing the dishes, the way women smell, being a dad, being loved, fall, Irish Pubs, curves, long hair, tattoos, darkness, the stars, dining, and dogs.

Ocean water, seaweed, tar, jellyfish and stingrays, the sun, palm trees, condiments, Math, Shakespeare, Wasps, Bugs, Sprinklers, Itchy grass, writing letters, writing emails, smoking, humidity, mold, flat land, spreadsheets, shaving, stress, depression, laundry, driving trucks, doctors, hospitals, camping, taking pictures, fake people, disrespect, tardiness, government, plants and gardening, fire drills, sales, heights, allergies, messiness, injustice, critiques, playing board games, losing, making decisions, people in pain or in need, working out, emergencies, walking the dog, and taking out the trash.

I know it seems like a very long list but really, there is so much more to your daddy than what you see here in black and white. I can't wait for you to learn this for yourself. I can't wait for you to get to know him as you grow up. You will come to see why I love him as much as I do but more importantly, you will come to know of his undying, devoted, and forever love for you.
